#88: Love Your Lymphatics with Chelsey Jean
[00:00:00]
Welcome back to episode of the Hormone Hub Podcast, where we talk all things perimenopause, menopause, and have the conversations no one else is having. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode.
Kylie: Hello. Hello, ladies. And welcome back to the Hormone Hub podcast. Today on the podcast, I have my very good friend. It’s always good friends I have on the podcast, isn’t it? Chelsey Jean from Chelsey Jean Lymphatics. And Chelsey’s here to talk to us today about the importance of our lymphatic health, how that impacts our detoxification systems our breast health, you know, so many areas.
And it’s something that we, we don’t actually consider, and it’s one of those things you don’t know. You don’t know.
So we’re going to talk about the importance of looking after your lymphatic health. Now Chelsey [00:01:00] owns a couple of clinics in Brisbane. But she is you know, an expert in lymphatic health.
She works. It’s all over the world with practitioners, she’s an educator for both clients and practitioners as well. And yeah, she’s also a qualified naturopath. So she’s got lots of feathers in her cap. So welcome Chelsey. It is great to have you on the podcast.
Chelsey: Thank you, Kylie. You know, we’ve been talking about hormones for years now.
To be able to educate women on where the lymphatic system comes into that and see the mind go, Oh my God, how didn’t I know about this 15 liters of lymph that is circulating through my body, of how much of an impact that it, that it makes on, on everyone. So yeah, thank you. Lovely to be here.
Kylie: Yeah, yeah, no, it’s great.
So for all of our ladies who are feeling fluidy and puffy, I think this is going to, answer [00:02:00] a lot of questions for you. So Chels, tell us, like, what is our lymphatic system?
Chelsey: Yeah, so those two things, fluidy, puffy, our lymphatic system is responsible for moving all of this fluid around our body. So that’s just one of the things that it does.
Secondly, it does transport hormones. Think of fat and hormones or everything has to get moved around from being picked up from one area and move to another area. So it does all of that work. And then it also is your immune system. So your white blood cells, your T cells, B cells, all of that is, is in your, they are, the lymphatic system is like the security.
As well as the filtration system of your body. And it does all of these things without having a pump. So your heart pumps the 5 litres, your lungs and heart, pump the 5 litres of blood around your body. But our [00:03:00] lymphatic system, if we are stagnant, if we’ve had injuries, if we cannot move, if we’re sitting in front of the TV too much, sitting at a desk job, All of those things are going to slow down the rate that we can recover, the right that we can transport all those vital nutrients around our body.
The way that we lose fat and the way that you know, our body keeps itself healthy and vibrant and clean. Isn’t going to happen if we have a system that is blocked.
Kylie: Yeah, exactly right. So if we were to sort of start,, moving, because that’s the thing. There’s so many simple things we can do to look after our lymphatic system.
You know, we’ve, yes, we can go to amazing clinics, but there’s things that we can do like every single day at home. So how do we, where would we start to start moving our lymphatic
system?
Chelsey: So think of our body as a, as a house. And the house, your [00:04:00] house has lots of areas that it can collect waste, so the gutters can collect leaves coming in from from trees you’re collecting you know, in your laundry, you’re collecting a lot of clothes in this kitchen sink can get quite grimy.
If you’re not continually cleaning your house, there’s areas of it that are going to get Stinky and smelly. And you don’t really want to be in the same thing that happens with, with our body areas of our body are going to fill up and become a little bit toxic, but unless the house is still going to be there, the frame and everything is still going to be that you’re still going to be able to function and move around, but.
When we start looking at the things of what’s causing this buildup. So have the bins been taken out? Is the sink blocked? What’s, is that too, is the wrong toilet paper being stuck in the toilet? Like what are these things that are causing this blockage in a house? Similar to what’s happening in our body.
So the things that [00:05:00] restrict lymph flow, especially in women are bras. Wearing, you know, tight clothes, bras. So bras are restricting the flow of lymph. Think of that 15 liters of a train system going through and pumping through. If you’re going to restrict it, especially some terrible wires around your heart.
That’s restricting tight undies.
Kylie: Sorry, just going back to the bras. One thing I have noticed, and we’ve had like a few conversations with my clients is, you know, a lot of them are wearing the same bra size that they’ve been wearing their entire life. They’re not the same size. So ladies, I encourage you to go and get checked because, go and get fitted.
You know, because if your bra is too tight, it’s, you’re restricting that, that lymph flow. So, okay. And knickers?
Chelsey: Knickers the same. I can tell if a client is, was worn the same, wears the same knickers every day. They have that same line going, that bikini line and their legs [00:06:00] go up, up, up. And then there’s this bulge at the top of their legs.
Yeah. Like I can see that that lymph is blocked and it’s not fat, it’s this fluid that just gets blocked. And then a lot of the tissue, the fibrous tissue just gets more blocked up and doesn’t allow that flow to happen and flow through the body. So bras, if we’re a single, like flick them off as soon as you can.
So bra less. As Nicholas as possible when it comes to undies change the styles. So one day have a g string one day have none one day do boy leg. Men’s undies are the most comfortable undies ever. I don’t know why women can’t have step ups like men. You know change that’s the style of undies every day.
Move now when it comes to movement you don’t need to go and get a gym membership. Yeah.
Kylie: You know,
Chelsey: you don’t have to pay for movement. I don’t care. Like if, if you’re injured and you can just lay in bed, you can still do [00:07:00] pretend synchronized swimming. You can still move, you can breathe. So moving your body has to happen.
We, we all know how important that is. Yeah.
Kylie: Hanging on about all the time as Chelsey and I are moving around now is we don’t, you know, it doesn’t need to be high intensity. It doesn’t need to be bootcamp. As long as you’re moving your body in some way, shape or form exercise, sorry, exercise walking is, you know, one of the best exercises, because you are, you’re getting that, you know, that heart rate moving, you’re getting that blood flow, you’re getting that lymphatic flow as well.
Chelsey: And how much effort you put into this. So if your house is full of grot, and if I said to you, Oh, you know, pick somebody that that you love, you know, is going to come over.
Just, I was normally say the queen, but can’t say that anymore. But if you know Chris Miller. Right. Also, yeah, is, is, is coming over and they’re going to be there on Saturday. Are you going to [00:08:00] do everything you can to clean up that house?
Kylie: Yeah, I even do that when my mum, when my mum says she’s coming over, that’s enough to strike fear into my heart, and it’s like okay.
We
Chelsey: can do this, Carls, we can clean up our act when we know what to do.
Kylie: Yep. Yeah. A hundred percent. That’s it. And I love that house analogy. You know, the house is always going to be there, but you know, there’s, there’s areas that we’re not paying attention to for sure. Absolutely. All right. So you’ve got a great sort of sequence.
Yeah. A great sequence for breast health.
Chelsey: Yes.
Kylie: So Chelsey and I can see each other on video here and we are recording the video. But for those of you listening on the podcast, we’re going to try and be as descriptive as we can.
Chelsey: Okay. Okay. So I discovered I’ve been doing this since I was 19. So a little while ago, and I discovered when I [00:09:00] was massaging my clients as a sports therapist, when I started at their heart, when I started at their chest, a different flow happened.
Their body, it was like me taking the top off a champagne bottle and every, all the bubbles flowing up and their, this flow and their body just released a lot of pain really easily. So I discovered that if I massage their chest first, and then it was just like, what, what does Tarzan do? He beats his chest before he goes and saves Jane.
What are those gorgeous guys do before they play footy? They do this. You know, and once again, I’m like, Oh my God, they’re activating their lymphatic system to exercise prior for needing their body to perform.
Kylie: Yeah. Yeah. Talk about ancient wisdom.
Chelsey: Yes. So I thought, wow, there’s something in this. And so I started massaging everybody at their chest first.
So above the breasts, underneath their arms, and always moving that flow where the lymphatic system has to go to [00:10:00] towards the heart. And by doing that, I was feeling around now, the tissue in somebody’s chest can feel very different at different times of the month and at various, you can get stringy type feeling, you can get heavy clad glue type feeling, you can get rough.
So it can be an iron dying deficiency. Can be someone who has breastfed each four of their kids for a year each. I can feel those breast ducts, you know, those milk ducts. You can feel those lumpy and bits and pieces. I can feel if somebody is congested or if they’ve had breast implants or any surgery around their chest, I can tell by having a feel of their body.
And unfortunately we women, when they get sore in their breasts, they go, don’t touch me. Yes, yes. Don’t talk, don’t talk, leave me alone. Don’t… When, what we need to do is we need the boobs to wiggle. We need them to, we need them to move, to pump this [00:11:00] lymph, to pump through that you know, instead of that getting stuck in the tissue, we need men to be attracted to our boobs.
So they get wiggled and jiggled. Yeah. Or women. Or women. Ourselves. Like, that’s, I think that’s a fascinate, fascination with boobs is. That’s yeah, ancient and moving.
Kylie: So, and you’ve got a specific sequence too. So if you’re listening to this. Probably at home, probably not in the car or if you’re out walking, but you know, Chelsey’s going to talk us through her, her breast sequence and we’re going to do it on video.
Chelsey: Yeah. So it’s, it’s pretty cool because the way that our body is structured with the lymphatic system is that our right hand side, all the lymph that drains into the right hand side only drains from your rib cage and your right arm in. That’s it. The left hand side has to take up your bum. Yep. Both legs.
Yep. And your arm. Yes. All have [00:12:00] to go into the left hand side. Yep. So that’s where, why we find breast cancer and a heavier breast on the left hand side because there’s a lot more fluid that needs to come up. Going through. Into that left hand side. Yes. I saw it. You’re right. Huh. Yeah. Feel up girls. Feel your boobs.
Normally the left hand side one is a little bit heavier than, than the right. Okay.
Kylie: All right. There you go.
Chelsey: So let’s start on the left. What I want you to do is you can just, you know, do a Tarzan is probably the best way to explain it for everybody listening. So beat your chest. Yeah. Beat your chest. and add in a couple of nice deep breaths.
Then you’re going to use your fingers and you’re going to push from your shoulder towards your heart, towards the middle. So you can either do the left hand to the left shoulder or I like to do the left hand to the right shoulder and drag towards the middle. Still while you’re breathing. So, and while you’re doing that and then go from your underarm towards [00:13:00] your sternum towards you, towards your chest, as you’re doing that, have a little bit of a feel, have a bit of a wiggle, like, what does that tissue feel like?
Is it sore to touch? Is it grainy? Does it feel like a rocky road? Does it feel like clad glue? What does it actually feel like? Because I promise you after doing this for two minutes, it’s going to feel different when you come back and do it again. What are you doing?
Kylie: I’ve got my arm up and all I can see is these, like, bingo wings.
You know, like the, I don’t know. Tuck shop arms. Tuck shop arms.
Chelsey: Yeah. So, starting around that breast area and then wiggling the boobs. Yep. You know, wiggling, having a good wiggle and jiggle through the boobs. Then put your hands up in the air and pretend you’re turning in light bulbs like a Hari Krishna.
Yep. And get those arms flopping and moving.
Kylie: The tuck shop arms.
Chelsey: Yeah. The tuck shop arms. So, yep. Turn in the. The the light bulbs above your head. So that is just a really good [00:14:00] way of opening up your lymphatic system. I can feel my toes are tingling, my legs. I can feel the lymph traveling up my body already because I’ve popped my cork.
Yeah.
Kylie: Okay. And that’s without even touching our legs.
Chelsey: That’s without even touching my legs. Like if somebody comes in and says, I’ve got a sore knee, guess where I’m going to start massaging them.
Kylie: Yeah. The chest.
Chelsey: They saw bum or ankle. I don’t care. I’m going to massage their chest first.
Kylie: Yeah. Yeah. No, that, that all makes sense.
Kylie: Hello, I see you there, juggling work, family, life, all while navigating perimenopause and menopause. But guess what? Maybe it’s time to break up with the hustle and grind. Going on a retreat is more than just about a vacation. It’s an investment in your well being and a step towards a happier, healthier you.
So take a moment, [00:15:00] consider the benefits of a retreat and give yourself the gift of rejuvenation and self care. Self care is all about giving the best of you, not what’s left of you. I want you to save 500 now, jump in for the Reignite You Retreat. We’re running in Bali in April 2024 and October 2024. And yes, we sure do have payment plans available.
See you there. .
Now, what’s the link. Cause I know there’s going to be a thousand women asking what’s the link with our lymphatic system and cellulite.
Chelsey: Yes. So if our lymphatic system, so another way analogy is to think of our body, like a aquarium, like a fish tank, and you’ve got all different organism, like your skin and like, everything’s all part of that.
If the filtration on that fish tank, Isn’t working, you’re going to get that algae growing on the outside. You’re going to get, you know, the, the, the fish in there aren’t going to [00:16:00] live very well. The weeds, like everything’s not going to look, it’s going to become more toxic. It’s just where our body is going to store toxins, fat cells, you know, and, and storing toxins.
We need to be able to really get into those areas and that area is above. So when it comes to thighs, most people have really tight hips. Yep. Yes. Or they’ve had a cesarean or abdominal surgery has restricted that flow of toxins that’s stuck in their legs. Yeah. Yeah. So with those areas, Kylie, you need to get harder and faster.
And that’s why we use my lymphatic gloves. Yes. Yes. So we get into it a little bit harder and we use the spiky side first and then the rollable magnetic side afterwards with my lymphatic cream to get into those cellulite areas. And what people don’t like is when you start doing this, when you start working on your cellulite, it’s going to [00:17:00] look worse first.
Kylie: Yeah. Okay. That’s good to know. Yeah. Cause most people freak out and
Chelsey: it’s going to go from that. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Good to know. It’s going to go from that compact look and then opening up, then the toxins can come out.
Kylie: Yeah. Okay. Good to know. And I think, you know, that’s just something so simple that we can, you know, do at home, start moving.
And, I’ll put the link to the gloves on in the show notes, but also, you can use your hands. You can use your mitts.
Okay.
Chelsey: Yeah. Use your head, massage your body move, groove, breathe, you know, digestion, moving those hormones. around, you know, it’s so we’re all deficient in vitamin D and that’s up to the lymphatic system to move it around.
Kylie: Yeah. And that’s it. And I think, this is the beauty of our body. And this is what I sort of say all the time is everything in our body is connected. So if [00:18:00] our, lymphatics aren’t working, it does then have a knock on impact for our digestion, our hormones, our, our overall health, our energy everything.
So it’s important because it’s, we want to take out the garbage. And, this is a really simple way of doing it. All right, Chelsey, where can, where’s the best place for people to find you?
Chelsey: I am live in my boob camp Facebook group once a month. We’ve got a great community in boob camp. We’ve got ladies there who have gone through breast cancer lipidema, lymphedema, other lymphatic diseases, cellulite, or just people just wanting some support in there with detoxification.
So a really great group there. Chelsey Jean Lymphatics. Clinic at Capella bar and at Springfield and yeah, so just on, on my website, Chelsey Jean lymphatics and Instagram follow along. We have lots of educational pieces, like I’m all about educating [00:19:00] because this big L word of lymphatics is something that we need everybody to know that fixing or helping one, this one system is going to affect everything. Yeah,
Kylie: absolutely. And yeah, I’ll make sure that all of Chelsey’s details are in the show notes for you. So yeah, definitely jump in boob camp. I’ve done it. It’s definitely worth. And it’s fun, it’s fun to be a part of.
All right, Chels, thanks you so much for coming on the podcast and yeah, we, I think this is a conversation that will continue and yeah, we would definitely love to have you back as well. All right. Thanks everyone for listening. Thank you so much. Bye. Bye.
